Am sure you or members of your family probably picked up some emergency preparedness tips in school .
However, the question is; are you really prepared for disaster? Disaster can be man made as in terror attacks, armed robberies, arson , hurricanes, earthquakes , landslides, tornadoes etc.
True, no one is ever fully prepared for emergency situations but knowing what to do in emergencies increases your chances of survival
With so much going on around the world and your locality in terms of natural and man made disaster situations, having a plan and knowing the steps to take if and when disaster strikes has become an important life skill for you and your family.
What level of emergency preparedness is in place in your family?
Here some basic emergency/ disaster preparation tips
•Learn evacuation routes.
Local officials in your location should help out here. If there are no evacuation routes in your locality, liaise with fellow residents to pressurize the authorities to have one in place and find out how you should get out of your area if you need to.
Provide a muster point .
•Have a family emergency plan.
Convene a family emergency contingency meeting.Sit down and talk about various likely emergency situations that are most likely to happen in your area and decide how your family will react in each situation.
•Assemble an emergency kit.
Buy a strong , easy-to-carry bag.
Put copies of important documents such as birth certificates, photo identification, medical/ hospital cards, some cash ,cheque book, spare keys and a list of important phone numbers.
Also to be kept in the emergency bag are; first aid kit, flashlight/ torch light, a few clothes like jeans and T shirts, one month’s supply of prescription medications for all family members , a small supply of water and biscuits, matches and blankets.
If you have a car , keep your gas tank filled as you will need the car for evacuation .
Make it a policy to refill your gas tank whenever it is is below half tank.
•Emergency app

To enjoy maximum benefits from the app ensure your friends and family are also on the app. That way once you press the emergency button, your friends and family will see it and compliment efforts of other rangers and security/ rescue agencies to get you help.
